The Microsoft® Exchange Server Analyzer Tool reads the SmtpInboundCommandSupportOptions property in the Internet Information Services (IIS) metabase to determine whether Exchange Server has been configured to support Extended Verbs. If the Exchange Server Analyzer finds that the SmtpInboundCommandSupportOptions setting is not set to 7697601, a warning is displayed.

Extended SMTP Verbs are required by both Exchange 2000 Server and Exchange Server 2003. The value in the IIS metabase must match the value set in the Active Directory® directory service. If you are running Exchange Server in a mixed-mode environment, this value must be set to 7697601.

Caution:
If you incorrectly modify the attributes of Active Directory objects when you use Active Directory Service Interfaces (ADSI) Edit, the LDP (ldp.exe) tool, or another Lightweight Directory Access Protocol (LDAP) version 3 client, you may cause serious problems. These problems may require that you reinstall Microsoft Windows Server™ 2003, Exchange Server 2003, or both. Modify Active Directory object attributes at your own risk.
To restore the default value of SmtpInboundCommandSupportOptions

  1. Open ADSI Edit and connect to a domain controller.

  2. Open the Configuration Container.

  3. Move to the following location:

    Configuration/Services/Microsoft Exchange/<Your Organization>/Administrative Groups/<Your Administrative Group>/Servers/<Your Exchange Server>/Protocols/SMTP/<Your Virtual Server>.

  4. Right-click the virtual server object, and then click Properties.

  5. For Select a property to view, select msExchSmtpInboundCommandsSupportOptions.

  6. In the Edit Attribute, enter 7697601.

  7. Click Set, then click Apply, and then click OK.

  8. Close ADSI Edit.
