The Microsoft® Exchange Server Analyzer Tool queries the Active Directory® directory service to determine whether the SMTP address is specified on the gatewayProxy attribute of the default recipient policy in your Exchange Server organization. If the Exchange Server Analyzer finds that the gatewayProxy attribute does not contain an SMTP address, the Exchange Server Analyzer displays an error.

This error is a critical error. You must add the SMTP address, such as SMTP:@contoso.com, to the gatewayProxy attribute of the default recipient policy in your Exchange Server organization. The default recipient policy must contain an SMTP address. If the default recipient policy does not contain an SMTP address, the Microsoft Exchange Information Store service will not initialize after restarting. This failure will occur across all Exchange servers in your Exchange Server organization the next time the Microsoft Exchange Information Store service is restarted.

Caution:
If you incorrectly modify the attributes of Active Directory objects when you use Active Directory Service Interfaces (ADSI) Edit, the LDP (ldp.exe) tool, or another Lightweight Directory Access Protocol (LDAP) version 3 client, you may cause serious problems. These problems may require that you reinstall Microsoft Windows Server™ 2003, Exchange Server 2003 or Exchange Server 2007, or both. Modify Active Directory object attributes at your own risk.
To add the SMTP address to the gatewayProxy attribute of the default recipient policy
  1. Start the ADSI Edit tool from Microsoft Windows® 2000 Support Tools or from Windows Server 2003 Support Tools.

  2. Expand the following nodes:

    • Configuration Container

    • Configuration

    • Services

    • Microsoft Exchange

    • Organization_Name

    • Recipient Policies

  3. In the details pane, right-click CN=Default Policy, and then click Properties.

  4. In the Attributes box, double-click gatewayProxy.

  5. In the Multi-valued String Editor dialog box, enter SMTP:@domain_name.com in the Value to add field, and then click Add.

    Note:
The syntax that you enter is important. You must include SMTP:@ before you enter the domain name of the Exchange Server organization. There are no white spaces in this string.
  6. Click OK, then click Apply, and then close ADSI Edit.

  7. Wait at least 15 minutes for replication.
