The Microsoft® Exchange Server Analyzer Tool queries the Active Directory® directory service to determine whether the msExchMaxRestoreStorageGroups attribute has been modified. If the Exchange Server Analyzer finds that the msExchMaxRestoreStorageGroups attribute has been set to 0, the Exchange Server Analyzer displays an error.

The msExchMaxRestoreStorageGroups attribute is a binary attribute of the information store object for each Exchange computer. If the msExchMaxRestoreStorageGroups attribute is set to 0, recovery storage groups cannot be created for the given Exchange computer.

This error may occur if you have performed an in-place upgrade from Exchange 2000 Server SP3 to Exchange Server 2003 SP1 on a Windows cluster, where the Exchange virtual server was not upgraded with Exchange Server 2003. Note that sometimes this in-place upgrade scenario may also cause Outlook® Mobile Access to fail.

You must correct the recovery storage group error by setting the msExchMaxRestoreStorageGroups attribute to 1 for each Exchange computer's information store object. The affected information store objects are displayed in the Exchange Server Analyzer output. If you need help with the Outlook Mobile Access issue, contact Microsoft support.

Caution:
If you incorrectly modify the attributes of Active Directory objects when you use Active Directory Service Interfaces (ADSI) Edit, the LDP tool (ldp.exe), or another Lightweight Directory Access Protocol (LDAP) version 3 client, you may cause serious problems. These problems may require that you reinstall Microsoft Windows Server™ 2003, Exchange Server 2003 or Exchange Server 2007, or both. Modify Active Directory object attributes at your own risk.
