If you deploy an update to your organization’s unified communications (UC) devices, and later find problems with the update, you can roll back your devices to a previous update version. When you roll back an update, it is removed from the Deployed Updateslist. The next time a device connects that has the rolled-back update installed, the device reverts to the last image that it had prior to the rolled-back update.

The rollback process works as follows: UC devices have two disk partitions; one is active, and the other inactive. The active partition hosts the firmware that was installed to the device in the most recent update. The inactive, partition hosts the firmware that was downloaded in the second most recent update. When you specify a deployed update to roll back, and a device with this update connects to Device Update Service, the device downloads and installs the update that has been approved the most recently into the inactive partition. Then the inactive partition becomes the active partition. The next time the device receives an update, it overwrites the inactive firmware and the partition hosting it again becomes the active partition.

Important:
If a device did not receive any updates previously, it cannot roll back. In addition, you can roll back a device only to the last previous update. In either situation, if necessary, you can download an earlier update and approve it. The device will then receive the approved, earlier update.
Note:
When working with updates, remember that a separate instance of Device Update Service runs in each pool. When you upload, approve, reject, or roll back an update, this action takes effect only for the current pool.

To roll back an update

  1. On the Deployed Updatestab of the Device Update Service Management Console, click the update to roll back. Use CTRL+click to select multiple updates.

  2. Click Roll Back, and then click Yesto confirm.
