Restrict Control Messages

Control messages are sent to cancel a posting, create a new newsgroup, and remove a newsgroup. These messages are received by NNTP Service and posted to special newsgroups in the NNTP virtual server's Newsgroups listing. The control messages are posted to one of the appropriate newsgroups: control.cancel, control.newgroup, and control.rmgroup. If you do not want users performing the administrative tasks the control messages contain, you can restrict access to newsgroups in which control messages are posted.

Important   If the Allow control messages check box is selected on the virtual server's Settings tab, you can restrict access to control messages. If this option is not selected, all control messages for the newsgroup are processed the same way as regular article postings.

You can restrict access to control messages in three ways:

• Define the special control.* newsgroups as moderated newsgroups.
• Control access to the newsgroup server from which the newsgroups are administered.
• Set ACLs on newsgroup directories. Assign the same ACL permissions only to administrators or users who you want to see the newsgroup. Modify the virtual directory, and then select Restrict newsgroup visibility. All non-administrative users who do not have the same permissions as the newsgroup folder will not see listings for the control newsgroups.
