Exchange 5.5 Migration

Caution   This section contains content that, if misunderstood, could result in Exchange 5.5 migration problems. For this reason, this section is intended for experienced administrators only.

You can use Migration Wizard to migrate mailboxes from an Exchange 5.5 organization to a separate Exchange 2000 organization. This migration process provides you with the opportunity to design a new Exchange topology.

Note   Exchange 2000 Service Pack 1 (SP1) does not support the two-step migration of Exchange 5.5.

The Exchange 5.5 migration approach assumes that Exchange 5.5 is on an external domain—which is a domain that is not in the same forest as Exchange 2000. Exchange 5.5 and Exchange 2000 do not share permissions, directories, or public folders. Therefore, these items must be manually re-created after the migration process.

The Exchange 5.5 to Exchange 2000 migration is included as an additional migration path in Migration Wizard. Exchange 5.5 migration functionality allows you to:

• Extract directory information using ADSI to perform a LDAP search
• Provide a user interface for common functions such as selecting accounts, servers, and containers
• Search for matches between migrated mailboxes and user objects based on the security identifier (SID) and X500 address
• Create user objects in Active Directory
• Merge contact directory information with user object attributes, and then delete contacts
• Activate mailboxes on Exchange 2000
• Use MAPI to connect to the Exchange 5.5 and Exchange 2000 mailboxes in order to read mailbox content from the Exchange 5.5 mailbox and write it to the Exchange 2000 mailbox
• Extract items from the source mailbox during migration
