When your organization has files and documents that must be available to a specific department, you can create public folders to collect and distribute information relating only to that department. You can create a new folder hierarchy and give it its own database. Note that new top-level hierarchies are designed to be accessed by applications and are not visible to MAPI clients, such as Outlook. If you want the public folder hierarchy to be visible to MAPI clients, you must create the folders under the default Public Folder hierarchy. If you are only creating new folders under Public Folders, you do not need to configure a new public folder hierarchy. All folders can be configured to receive mail and support discussions.
