This topic explains how to use the Microsoft Exchange Server 2007 SP1 Setup wizard or a Command Prompt window to upgrade from the release to manufacturing (RTM) version of Exchange 2007 to Exchange 2007 Service Pack 1 (SP1). If you have one or more Exchange 2007 server roles or the Exchange management tools installed, you can upgrade to Exchange 2007 SP1.
In some cases, you may want to upgrade an Exchange 2007 SP1 server again. For example, if the first upgrade failed for one or more server roles, you must use either of the procedures in this topic to upgrade again.

When installing Exchange 2007 SP1 on multiple Exchange 2007 servers within an organization, we recommend that you first upgrade the Client Access servers. In an organization that has multiple Active Directory sites that use multiple Client Access servers in a proxy situation, you must upgrade the Internet-facing Client Access servers before the Client Access servers that are not Internet-facing. |
Before You Begin
Before you begin the procedures in this topic, be aware of the following:
- You must have Exchange 2007 installed.
- Your organization must meet the requirements that are listed in
Exchange 2007
System Requirements.
Important: It is not supported to upgrade your operating system to Windows Server 2008, and then upgrade to Exchange 2007 SP1. It is also not supported to upgrade to Exchange 2007 SP1, and then upgrade your operating system to Windows Server 2008. To deploy Exchange 2007 SP1 on Windows Server 2008, you must install Windows Server 2008 on a computer that does not have Exchange installed, and then install Exchange 2007 SP1. - We recommend that you stop and then restart the Remote Registry
service.
- You cannot use the Setup wizard to upgrade a clustered Mailbox
server. For more information about upgrading clustered Mailbox
servers, see Upgrading Clustered
Mailbox Servers to Exchange 2007 SP1 or SP2.
- When you upgrade an Exchange 2007 RTM server to
Exchange 2007 SP1, you upgrade all the server roles that
are installed on that server.
- After you upgrade to Exchange 2007 SP1, you cannot
uninstall the service pack to revert
to Exchange 2007 RTM. If you uninstall, you will
remove Exchange 2007 from the server.
- Ensure that the fully qualified domain name (FQDN) setting that
you specify is the FQDN for your server. If you have a FQDN
specified that is not the FQDN for your server, Exchange 2007
SP1 installation will fail.
Required Permissions
The following permissions are required to upgrade to Exchange 2007 SP1:
- To upgrade the first Exchange 2007 RTM server in your
organization that has the Client Access, Hub Transport, Mailbox, or
Unified Messaging server role installed to
Exchange 2007 SP1, the account you use must be delegated
the Exchange Organization Administrators role. The account
must also be a member of the local Administrators group on that
computer.
- To upgrade an Exchange 2007 RTM server that has the
Edge Transport server role installed to
Exchange 2007 SP1, the account you use must be a member
of the local Administrators group on that computer.
- After you have upgraded the first of each
Exchange 2007 RTM server roles in your organization, to
upgrade additional servers to Exchange 2007 SP1, the
account you use must be delegated the Exchange Server
Administrators role. The account must also be a member of the local
Administrators group on that computer.
- To upgrade a computer that has only the
Exchange management tools installed, you must log on by using
an account that is a member of the local Administrators group on
that computer.
- If you have not yet prepared the schema for
Exchange 2007 SP1, the account you use to upgrade the
server must be a member of the Schema Admins group and the
Enterprise Admins group.
Note: You must prepare the schema in the same domain and Active Directory site as the schema master. If the first server that you upgrade is not in the same domain and Active Directory site as the schema master, or if you want to prepare the schema separately from upgrading the first server, you must run Setup /PrepareSchema from a Command Prompt window on a computer that is in the same domain and Active Directory site as the schema master. - If you have not yet prepared Active Directory for
Exchange 2007 SP1, the account you use to upgrade the
server must be a member of the Enterprise Admins group.
Note: You must prepare Active Directory in the same domain and Active Directory site as the schema master. If the first server that you upgrade is not in the same domain and Active Directory site as the schema master, or if you want to prepare Active Directory separately from upgrading the first server, you must run Setup /PrepareAD from a Command Prompt window on a computer that is in the same domain and Active Directory site as the schema master. - If you have not yet prepared the domain for
Exchange 2007 SP1, the account you use to upgrade the
server must be a member of the Domain Admins group.
Note: If you want to prepare the domain separately from upgrading the first server, you must run Setup /PrepareDomain or Setup /PrepareAllDomains from a Command Prompt window.

Procedure
To use the Exchange Server 2007 SP1 Setup wizard to upgrade to Exchange 2007 SP1

Log on to the server on which you want to install Exchange 2007 SP1.

Insert the Exchange Server 2007 SP1 DVD into the DVD drive or download the Exchange 2007 SP1 package, and then run Setup.com. For download information, see Exchange Server 2007 Service Pack 1.

On the Start page, under Install, click Install Microsoft Exchange Server 2007 SP1.

In the Exchange Server 2007 SP1 Setup wizard, on the Introduction page, click Next.

On the License Agreement page, select I Accept the terms in the license agreement, and then click Next.

On the Readiness Checks page, view the status to determine if the server role prerequisite checks completed successfully. If they have completed successfully, click Upgrade to upgrade to Exchange 2007 SP1.

On the Completion page, click Finish.
To use a Command Prompt window to upgrade to Exchange 2007 SP1

Log on to the server on which you want to install Exchange 2007 SP1.

Insert the Exchange Server 2007 SP1 DVD into the DVD drive or download the Exchange 2007 SP1 package. For download information, see Exchange Server 2007 Service Pack 1.

At a command prompt, run the following command.
