This topic provides information about how to troubleshoot Microsoft Exchange Server 2007 Setup if Setup fails with the following error:

ADAM install error: The name 'MSExchange' is already in use as an ADAM instance name. Type a different instance name. Check the Setup Logs.

The ExchangeSetup.log file also includes the following warning:

Process adamInstall.exe has finished with exit code 20007.

This issue occurs when the Microsoft Exchange Active Directory Application Mode (ADAM) service has already been installed during a previously failed installation.

Resolution

To resolve the problem, remove the Exchange Server 2007 ADAM service.

Before You Begin

To perform this procedure, the account you use must have membership in the local Administrators group. For more information about permissions, delegating roles, and the rights that are required to administer Exchange 2007, see Permission Considerations.

Procedure

To remove the Exchange 2007 ADAM service

  1. Go to the following folder: C:\Windows\ADAM.

  2. Run the following command:

    adamuninstall.exe /force /i:MSExchange
    Note:
    If this command fails, you can run sc delete ADAM_MSExchange

After you have removed the ADAM service, you can continue with Exchange Setup.
