A mailbox user can delegate the management of a part of his or her mailbox, typically the calendar and tasks, to another user. This configuration is generally known as the manager-delegate configuration. To learn more about the manager-delegate configuration, see "Delegating Mailbox Management" in the Understanding Mailbox Permissions Exchange Help topic.

In Microsoft Office Outlook versions earlier than Outlook 2007, it is possible to have managers and their delegates use different versions of Outlook. For example, a manager could use Outlook 2003 and the delegates could use Outlook 2002.

Note:
Even though it is possible to have managers and delegates use different versions of Outlook before Outlook 2007, this is not a recommended configuration.

When you use delegates in Outlook 2007, we recommend that managers and all their delegates use the same version of Microsoft Office Outlook (specifically, Outlook 2007 Service Pack 2). The manager and the delegates are not prevented from running mixed versions of Outlook in an Outlook 2007 Service Pack 2 (SP2) environment. However, we strongly recommend that such an overlapping period be kept as short as possible.

If either the manager or the delegates use Microsoft Entourage 2004 for Mac version 11.3.0 or a later version, you can have a mixed manager-delegate topology.

Important:
You cannot connect to a Microsoft Exchange Server 2007 mailbox using an Entourage 2004 or Entourage 2008 client if public folders do not exist in your Exchange 2007 organization. To have a manager-delegate configuration where some users use Outlook 2007 and some users use Entourage 2004 or later versions, you must add public folders to your Exchange 2007 organization.

The following table summarizes supported client versions for manager-delegate configuration when you are using Outlook 2007.
