The Microsoft® Exchange Server Analyzer Tool queries the Active Directory® directory service to determine the number of public folder hierarchies that have a value of 1 for the msExchPFTreeType attribute. A value of 1 for the msExchPFTreeType attribute indicates that the public folder hierarchy is the designated public folder hierarchy for MAPI clients. If the Exchange Server Analyzer determines that more than one public folder hierarchy in the Exchange organization has a value of 1 for the msExchPFTreeType attribute, the Exchange Server Analyzer displays an error.

This error indicates that more than one public folder hierarchy for MAPI clients was found in the Exchange organization. The presence of multiple public folder hierarchies for MAPI clients can cause problems.

To resolve this problem, you can use an Active Directory editing tool to set the value for the msExchPFTreeType attribute of all public folder hierarchies except the MAPI public folder hierarchy to 0. If necessary, reconfigure mailbox stores on your Exchange servers to point to the MAPI public folder hierarchy as the default public folder store for MAPI clients.

If you incorrectly modify the attributes of Active Directory objects when you use ADSI Edit, the LDP tool, or another Lightweight Directory Access Protocol (LDAP) version 3 client, you may cause serious problems. These problems may require that you reinstall Microsoft Windows Server™ 2003, Exchange Server 2003, or both. Modify Active Directory object attributes at your own risk.
To correct this error

  1. Use an Active Directory editing tool to locate the public folder objects in Active Directory. The public folder objects can be found at: CN=Configuration, CN=Services, CN=Microsoft Exchange, CN=<OrganizationName>, CN=Administrative Groups, CN=<AdminGroupName>, CN=Folder Hierarchies

  2. Change the msExchPFTreeType attribute for all public folder hierarchy objects except the MAPI public folder hierarchy by entering 0 as the new value.

  3. Close the Active Directory editor.

  4. Open Exchange System Manager.

  5. To access the Properties for each mailbox store, click Administrative Groups, expand your administrative group, expand Servers, expand your server, and expand your storage group. Then, right-click the mailbox store whose Properties you want to change, and select Properties.

  6. On the General tab, for the Default public store field, click Browse.

  7. Select the MAPI public folder hierarchy, and then click OK two times to save the changes.

  8. Repeat steps 5-7 for each mailbox store.
