The Microsoft® Exchange Server Analyzer Tool queries the Win32_Process Microsoft Windows® Management Instrumentation (WMI) class to determine the value of the Started key for the MSExchangeMGMT instance, which represents the Microsoft Exchange Management service. If the Exchange Server Analyzer finds the value of the Started key for the MSExchangeMGMT instance does not equal True, a warning is displayed.

The Exchange Management service was introduced in Exchange 2000 Server Service Pack 2. Among other things, the Exchange Server Message Tracking Center functionality, and certain Exchange System Manager functions depend on this service to function.

The Exchange Management service lets you specify, through the user interface, which domain controller or global catalog server Exchange Server 2003 or Exchange 2000 Server use to access the Active Directory® directory service. This service is also required for message tracking. You can disable this service without affecting the core functionality of Exchange. However, when auditing your Exchange Server functionality, you may require message tracking capabilities on all Exchange Server computers that route mail.

Note:
Because front-end servers are most frequently used to access mail instead of to route mail, you may find that you do not need to run the Exchange Management service on your front-end servers.

To configure the Exchange Management service to start automatically

  1. Open the Services Microsoft Management Console (MMC) snap-in.

  2. Double-click Microsoft Exchange Management service.

  3. On the General tab of the Microsoft Exchange Management properties page, select Automatic from the Startup type dialog box, and then click Apply.

  4. Under Server status, click Start, and then click OK.
