The Microsoft® Exchange Server Analyzer Tool reads the following registry entry to determine the files and folders that have been excluded from backups using Windows Backup:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\BackupRestore\FilesNotToBackup

The Exchange Server Analyzer specifically looks for a string that contains "SMEX\DATA".

If the Exchange Server Analyzer finds that the FilesNotToBackup key contains a value that contains the string "SMEX\DATA", the Exchange Server Analyzer displays a warning.

If you are not using Windows Backup, you can safely ignore this warning. If you are using Windows Backup, it is recommended that you remove the exclusion for the SMEX\DATA directory. Trend Micro recommends that users backup all files in this folder that have a .mdb file name extension. The backup files can be used in the event the production .mdb files in the SMEX\DATA folder become corrupted or are deleted.

To correct this warning

  1. Open a registry editor, such as Regedit.exe or Regedt32.exe.

  2. Navigate to: HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\BackupRestore\FilesNotToBackup

  3. Select FilesNotToBackup in the left pane.

  4. In the right pane, right-click the value that contains the string "SMEX\DATA" and select Delete.

  5. Close the registry editor.
