The Microsoft® Exchange Server Analyzer Tool queries the Win32_ComputerSystem Microsoft Windows® Management Instrumentation (WMI) class to determine the value of the Model key for the Exchange Server computer. If the value for this key contains the string "Virtual Machine," an error is displayed.
The presence of the string "Virtual Machine" indicates that the Exchange Server computer is running inside a Microsoft Virtual PC 200x virtual computer. Virtual PC 200x is a software virtualization solution that enables you to run multiple PC-based operating systems simultaneously on one workstation. Microsoft does not support running any version of Microsoft Exchange Server on a virtual machine or on an emulator. This is true for Exchange Server running on Microsoft Virtual Server 200x, Microsoft Virtual PC 200x, or any third-party virtual machine program. Microsoft Exchange Server platforms are designed and tested to run only on physical hardware, particularly those hardware platforms that are listed in the Windows Server Catalog (http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=17219).
To correct this error
-
Move the mailboxes from the Exchange Server running under Virtual PC 200x to a non-virtual Exchange Server computer.
-
Re-home any public folders and transfer any roles held by the virtual Exchange server as necessary.
-
Uninstall Exchange from the virtual machine to decommission and remove from your Exchange infrastructure and from the Active Directory® directory service.
