The Microsoft® Exchange Server Analyzer Tool queries the Active Directory® directory service to determine the value for the msExchESEParamEnableOnlineDefrag attribute on each storage group object. A value of True indicates that online database maintenance will occur according to the configured schedule. A value of False indicates that online maintenance will not occur. If the Exchange Server Analyzer finds the value for the msExchESEParamEnableOnlineDefrag attribute set to False, an error is displayed.
Online database maintenance, including defragmentation, in Exchange Server is very important. During this interval, tasks like dumpster cleanup (deletion of messages that have passed their deleted item retention date), public folder expiry (messages in public folders that are older than a certain date are expired), deleted mailbox cleanup, online defragmentation (database objects that are no longer being used are detected and removed, thereby making additional database space available) and so on, are performed. These processes help keep the Exchange server healthy and performance stable. Online database maintenance should not be set to Never Run because this can cause performance to degrade over time.
Caution: |
---|
If you incorrectly modify the attributes of Active Directory objects when you use Active Directory Service Interfaces (ADSI) Edit, the LDP (ldp.exe) tool, or another Lightweight Directory Access Protocol (LDAP) version 3 client, you may cause serious problems. These problems may require that you reinstall Microsoft Windows Server™ 2003, Exchange Server 2003 or Exchange Server 2007, or both. Modify Active Directory object attributes at your own risk. |
