The Microsoft® Exchange Server Analyzer Tool reads the following registry entry to determine whether Microsoft Exchange Intelligent Message Filter is installed and enabled on the server:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\ Software\Microsoft\Exchange\ContentFilter

If the Exchange Server Analyzer finds that the ContentFilterBindings value entry in the ContentFilter registry key is present, but the ContentFilterBindings value is not configured, the Exchange Server Analyzer displays a warning message.

Note:
The presence of the ContentFilterBindings value entry in the ContentFilter registry key when the ContentFilterBindings value is not configured indicates that Intelligent Message Filter is not enabled on the server.

Microsoft Exchange Intelligent Message Filter identifies messages that are likely to be unsolicited commercial e-mail (UCE). After you deploy Intelligent Message Filter on your Exchange gateway servers or Exchange bridgehead servers that accept incoming e-mail, you must enable Intelligent Message Filter on each SMTP virtual server that accepts Internet e-mail messages.

To view the ContentFilter registry key

  1. In Registry Editor (regedit), in the details pane, right-click ContentFilter to view the setting for ContentFilterBindings.

    Note:
    If you have not configured Exchange Intelligent Message Filter on your SMTP virtual server, the ContentFilterBindings value will be null.

It is recommended that Exchange Intelligent Message Filter be enabled on all Exchange Servers that have Intelligent Message Filter installed. To enable Intelligent Message Filter on your SMTP virtual server, perform the following procedure. After enabling Intelligent Message Filter, you can verify the value of ContentFilter registry key in the registry.

To enable Intelligent Message Filter

  1. Click Start, point to All Programs, point to Microsoft Exchange, and then click System Manager.

  2. In Exchange System Manager, expand Servers, expand Server name, expand Protocols, expand SMTP, right-click Intelligent Message Filtering, and then click Properties.

  3. On the General tab, under Apply intelligent message filtering to the following virtual servers' IP addresses, click the check box next to each SMTP virtual server on which you want to enable Intelligent Message Filter.
