The side-by-side migration requires new server hardware and software that meets or exceeds minimum standards. Office Communications Server 2007 R2 requires 64-bit server software and hardware. In addition, requirements for CPU cores and RAM are different from the minimum requirements for Live Communications Server. For details about hardware requirements for Office Communications Server 2007 R2, see Hardware Requirements for Office Communications Server 2007 R2in the Supported Topologies and Infrastructure Requirements documentation.

The following are the server operating system requirements and server software requirements for Office Communications Server 2007 R2:

Office Communications Server 2007 R2 supports placing more than one server role on each server. Understanding which components can be collocated and which cannot be collocated will help ensure that your final system architecture is correctly planned. For details, see Supported Server Role Collocationin the Supported Topologies and Infrastructure Requirements documentation.

Office Communications Server 2007 R2 and Live Communications Server cannot coexist in a single pool or an Edge Server array. You can, however, connect a Live Communications Server pool and an Office Communications Server 2007 R2 pool to the same load balancer. For example, if you have an array of Live Communications Server Directors attached to a load balancer, you can also simultaneously attach an Office Communications Server 2007 R2 Director server array to the same load balancer. The use of Windows Server Network Load Balancing is not supported. For details, see Planning Load Balancingin the Planning and Architecture documentation.

Office Communications Server 2007 R2 Enterprise Edition requires SQL Server 2005 with Service Pack 2 or SQL Server 2008 as the database server. Due to schema changes in the supporting SQL databases, Live Communications Server databases do not support Office Communications Server 2007 R2. Because of these database schema changes, creating new databases for Office Communications Server 2007 R2 support is a requirement of the migration process. For details about these tasks, see Configure SQL Server for Office Communications Serverin the Deploying Office Communications Server 2007 R2 Enterprise Edition documentation.

For details about software requirements for Office Communications Server 2007 R2, see System Platform Requirements for Servers and Clientsin the Supported Topologies and Infrastructure Requirements documentation.
