Topology Builder is installed along with the Communications Server 2010 Administration Tools. You can install Topology Builder on any computer that meets the software prerequisites and use it to define your topology. However, to publish your topology, you must install Topology Builder on the server on which you will deploy your first Front End Server, and then publish it from that server.

You are not required to prepare Active Directory Domain Services (AD DS) before you install Topology Builder, but you must do so before you publish a topology. For more details about preparing AD DS, see Preparing Active Directory Domain Services for Communications Server 2010.

Use the following procedure to do one of the following:

• If you are in the process of defining your topology and have not yet prepared your environment for deployment of Communications Server 2010, install Topology Builder on any computer that meets the software requirements for Topology Builder. For details about the software requirements, see Topology Builder Requirements for Installation, Publishing, and Administration.
  
  
• If you have completed your initial design in Topology Builder on a computer other than the server on which you will deploy your first Front End Server, and you have prepared your environment for deployment, install Topology Builder on the server that will be your first Front End Server.
