Topology Builder is installed along with the Communications Server 2010 Administration Tools. You can install Topology Builder on any computer that meets the software prerequisites and use it to define your topology. However, to publish your topology, you must install Topology Builder on the server on which you will deploy your first Front End Server, and then publish it from that server.

You are not required to prepare Active Directory Domain Services (AD DS) before you install Topology Builder, but you must do so before you publish a topology. For more details about preparing AD DS, see Preparing Active Directory Domain Services for Communications Server 2010.

Use the following procedure to do one of the following:

To install the Communications Server 2010 Administration Tools (including Topology Builder)

  1. On the computer, from the installation media, double-click <mediadrive>\Setup\amd64\Setup.exe.

  2. If you are prompted to install the Microsoft Visual C++ 2008 distributable, click Yes.

  3. On the Microsoft Communications Server 2010 (Beta Refresh) Installation Location page, click OK.

  4. On the End User License Agreement page, review the license terms, click I accept, and then click OK. This step is required before you can continue.

  5. On the Microsoft Communications Server 2010 (Beta Refresh) – Deployment Wizard page, click Install Topology Builder.

  6. When the installation successfully completes, click Exit.
