Office Communications Server supports both computer-based and device-based clients. The features available to individual users depend on which server roles are deployed, how the administrator configures user accounts, and which client and/or operating system is running on the user's computer.

Microsoft Exchange Server 2007 with Service Pack 1 (SP1) with Unified Messaging is required for integration of Office Communications Server with the voice and e-mail features of Exchange Server.

Computer-Based Clients

Office Communications Server 2007 R2 supports the following computer-based clients:

Microsoft Office Communicator

Microsoft Office Communicator 2007 R2 is the recommended unified communications client for Office Communications Server 2007 R2. This client supports placing and receiving calls, enhanced presence, instant messaging (IM), and multimodal conferencing features.

Important:
Users using Office Communicator 2007 R2 cannot be homed on an Office Communications Server 2007 or a Live Communications Server 2005 with SP1 Enterprise pool or Standard Edition server.

For both internal and remote clients, the certification authority (CA) certificate chain for the Office Communications Server 2007 R2 deployment must be downloaded and installed to the certificate store of the client computer.

Tip:
The root certificates for many popular CAs are included with the client installation.

Supported Versions of Office Communicator

Office Communications Server 2007 R2 supports the following versions of Office Communicator:

  • Office Communicator 2007 R2

  • Office Communicator 2007

  • Office Communicator 2005 (only for IM and legacy presence; enhanced presence and voice/video are not supported)

Remote Desktop Support

Office Communicator 2007 and Office Communicator 2007 R2 support Remote Desktop Services (formerly Terminal Services) and Citrix Metaframe only when used for IM and presence.

Communicator Web Access Client

When Communicator Web Access is deployed, users can use a Web browser to access the presence, IM, and conferencing features of Office Communications Server without installing a desktop client or connecting through a VPN.

For both internal and remote clients, the CA certificate chain for the Office Communications Server deployment must be downloaded and installed to the certificate store of the client computer. Microsoft Office Live Meeting Client

The Microsoft Office Live Meeting client is the data collaboration and audio/video client for both Office Communications Server and the hosted Microsoft Live Meeting service. It allows users to participate in meetings.

Office Communications Server 2007 R2 supports the Office Live Meeting 2007 version of the Office Live Meeting client for Web conferencing.

Remote Desktop Support

Microsoft Office Live Meeting 2007 is not optimized for use with Remote Desktop Services. Features and functionality are not supported when Microsoft Office Live Meeting 2007 is used in a remote desktop environment.

Microsoft Outlook Add-in

The Microsoft Outlook Add-in is the conference scheduling client for Office Communications Server. This scheduling client is used for Web conferencing and dial-in conferencing scheduling.

Microsoft Office Communications Server Attendant

Office Communications Server 2007 R2 Attendant is an integrated call management application that enables you to manage many conversations at once through rapid call handling, IM, and on-screen routing.

Microsoft Office Communications Server Group Chat

Microsoft Office Communications Server 2007 R2 Group Chat is the group chat client. This client, together with Microsoft Office Communications Server 2007 R2 Group Chat Server, enables real-time communication using group chat sessions, with persistent content that is retained after sessions end. It is used to post and access chat room content, including files, links, and text, as well as to exchange IM messages between two users.

Important:
Group Chat must be installed on an NTFS file system to enforce file system security. FAT32 is not a supported file system for Group Chat.

Microsoft Office Communicator Mobile is a unified communications client that runs on Windows Mobile 6.0 or Windows Mobile 6.1 software for Pocket PC and smartphone devices. Communicator Mobile integrates IM, presence, and telephony.

To perform authentication, the 2007 R2 version of Communicator Mobile requires the root certificate that is part of the server certificate to be installed on the device. By default, Windows Mobile-powered devices are shipped with a variety of certificates. If your organization uses a public CA, the root certificate may already be installed on your users' mobile devices. Microsoft Office Communicator Mobile for Java is used to support mobile devices that run Java Mobile Edition software like Nokia S60, Nokia S40, and Motorola RAZR V3xx phones. Communicator Mobile for Java provides Contact List, presence, IM, corporate directory search, and voice mail and messaging functionality.

Important:
Communicator Mobile for Java requires Office Communications Server 2007 R2 with Communicator Web Access and other server components. For details, see Communicator Mobile for Javain the Client Planning and Deployment documentation.

Communicator Mobile for Java can be installed on the following mobile phones:

  • Capable of running Java applications greater than 512 KB, and with a heap size of 2 MB.

  • Mobile Information Device Profile 2.0 (MIDP 2.0).

  • Connected Limited Device Configuration 1.1 (CLDC 1.1).

  • Screen resolution:

    • 240x320 for Nokia S40 and Motorola RAZR V3xx phones.

    • 240X 320 or 320x240 for Nokia S60 phones.

  • Data-connection-enabled (GPRS, Edge, or 3G connection) mobile device. Subscription to an unlimited data plan on the mobile device is recommended, because the client and server will be exchanging messages even when they are in an idle state.

Microsoft Office Communicator 2007 R2 Phone Edition

Microsoft Office Communicator 2007 R2 Phone Edition is an intelligent Internet Protocol (IP) phone that supports placing and receiving calls, enhanced presence, SIP signaling, and a user experience similar to that of Office Communicator.

To perform authentication, Communicator Phone Edition requires certificates. If your organization uses a public CA, the certificate will probably be trusted by the device automatically, because Windows CE includes the list of trusted public CAs. However, if your organization uses internal certificates for the internal Office Communications Server 2007 R2 servers, the root CA certificate from the internal CA must be installed on the device. You must use the network to install the root CA certificate.

The Microsoft RoundTable conferencing device is an advanced conferencing device that provides a 360-degree view of the conference room, wideband audio, and video that tracks the flow of conversation among multiple speakers.
