If you designed a topology file by using the Planning Tool, you can import the file containing that topology design into Topology Builder to use as the starting point for topology definition and deployment. Before you import the topology design from the Planning Tool, you must install the Communications Server Administration Tools, which include Topology Builder, onto the computer on which you want to use Topology Builder. For details about installing the Planning Tool and using it to design a topology, see Using the Planning Tool to Design the Topology (Optional). For details about how to install Topology Builder, see Install Topology Builder with the Administration Tools.

To import a Planning Tool topology file into Topology Builder

  1. Ensure that the XML file containing the topology is available from the computer, either locally, on portable media, or on a network share.

  2. Open Topology Builder on the server.

  3. In the Actions pane, click Open Topology from a local file, and then click OK.

  4. Navigate to the location of the saved XML file from the Planning Tool, click the file, and then click Open.

The topology server roles and settings from the file are populated in Topology Builder. For details about how to use Topology Builder to define and configure your topology in Topology Builder, which is required to deploy Communications Server 2010, see Define and Configure a Topology in Topology Builder.
